Paatal Lok: A Wise Review

When was the last time you started a series and didn’t even blink till the end. Paatal Lok is captivating and terrifying at the same time.

Story revolves around a failed assassination attempt case of a TV journalist Sanjeev Mehra, which is handled by Inspector Hathi Ram Chaudhary(Jaideep Ahlawat). Inspector is past his prime and has lost all the hopes of getting promoted. He reports to an officer who was his junior and barely gets any cases which makes any difference. But when he gets this case, he considers it a golden opportunity, will he make it count or will he falter?

As Hathi Ram along with the rookie Ansari (Ishwak Singh) goes deeper into the case, they unfold the terrifying history of 4 killers, Vishal Tyagi (Abhishek Banerjee), Tope Singh (Jagjeet Sandhu, Kabir M (Aasif Khan), and Cheeni (Mairembam Ronaldo Singh). This terrific show promises everything from old age prejudices to corruption, politics, violence and greed for power. Hathi Ram’s journey to solve the case takes him to Chitrakoot where some of the most powerful scenes are shot and Ansari lands in Punjab to learn about Tope Singh where his uncle tells him the horrific back story where one scene may send chills down your spine.

Story is gripping but it falters with too many characters popping up in last few episodes. Climax is not convincing and you will be left surprised to know the stupid reason for not killing the journalist. This could have been improved, it kept us asking for more convincing end.

But over-all Paatal Lok, is a captivating crime thriller set in and around Delhi with some powerful shots in Punjab and Chitrakoot. The show is meticulously crafted by Sudip Sharma Avinash Arun and Prosit Roy, terrific performances by Jaideep Ahlawat, Neeraj Kabi and Ishwak Singh complementing it beautifully.
